Moon Lodge Chips

Moon Lodge & The Whole Shabang Chips History

If you’ve heard of Moon Lodge chips, or The Whole Shabang chips, they are one and the same. Moon Lodge is simply the owning company’s sector, and The Whole Shabang is the brand name of the chips. They have multiple different flavors that fall under the umbrella.

And the reason you may have never seen these chips in your local grocery store is because they were created and marketed primarily to prisons. So, you have to go to jail in order to get to experience these. Or – maybe not.

These are available to the general public now, but for a long time, they were only available to inmates whose cafeterias served them.

Here’s where some of the confusion of Moon Lodge and The Whole Shabang come out. Originally, The Whole Shabang was a flavor of Moon Lodge chips. But as demand grew, they created their own line of The Whole Shabang, making it a line of chips rather than simply a flavor. And that line now holds several different flavors.

Moon Lodge chips were a private label brand made by the Keefe Group. The private label was offered to prison commissary stores. The Whole Shabang flavor was like the perfect combination of BBQ mixed with salt & vinegar. They were thought to be a spin-off of a chip known as All-Dressed that was popular in Canada.

It didn’t take very long for the popularity to take off. While they these were sold to commissary stores with no intentions of expansion, that didn’t last long. People who had been in jail or prison and then released fell in love with the chips and began to demand they be made public.

While you could sometimes find these chips on Amazon and eBay, they were hard to get your hands on. People started reaching out to Keefe and requesting the chips. Keefe took these requests seriously.

In 2012, they made a public announcement stating they knew these chips were highly popular. At that time, they had no intentions of offering the chips publicly or on a large-scale demand. They made that very clear with their public acknowledgement of popularity.

However, their stance dwindled over the years. So many people were requesting them endlessly that they decided to offer them publicly.

Now, you can find them available online, and in some retail stores as well. No longer are they reserved just for the prison commissaries.

Separating Moon Lodge Chips from The Whole Shabang Chips

We mentioned earlier that Moon Lodge and The Whole Shabang Chips are the same, but there’s a bit more to the story.

When The Whole Shabang Chips first came out, they were part of the brand Moon Lodge. They were just one flavor in a whole line of chips that the Keefe Group sold to commissaries.

But as that specific flavor became so popular, change was necessary. Moon Lodge still has a line of other flavors, but those flavors now have nothing to do with The Whole Shabang chips.

Now, there is a line of The Whole Shabang Chips. These chips and snacks were created from the very popular Whole Shabang flavor that was so highly requested by anyone who had got to try them.

Moon Lodge chips continue to be out there in places, but in most cases, people are really just looking for The Whole Shabang chips. This is what we meant when we said they are one and the same.

The Whole Shabang lineup was created to provide a public option available outside of those commissaries.

Who Owns These Chips?

Both Moon Lodge Chips and The Whole Shabang Chips are owned by Keefe Groups. Keefe has long been known as a company that produces private label brands to be sold in commissaries and other similar stores.

Many of their items are sold exclusively to these types of stores, and never made available to the general public. Moon Lodge chips are still just sold to commissaries. The Whole Shabang chips are a specific flavor turned into a line of snacks for the general public.

The demand must have been really high for the Keefe Group to take these steps, and create a public version of one of their private label offerings.

How Did The Whole Shabang Chips Get Their Name?

The Whole Shabang chips were a very popular flavor of The Moon Lodge brand. From the commissary stores they were available in, this was the most sought-after flavor, although there were several different flavor options to choose from.

In order to avoid confusion, we’re primarily focusing on The Whole Shabang chips in this guide.

We’re not sure exactly where the name for this flavor came from, but it was part of the Moon Lodge lineup. The flavor is described as being unique, putting several popular flavors into one chip and creating a flavor all its own.

The brand The Whole Shabang was born of that flavor, which is why it has that name.

But in an effort to keep this guide about both things, let’s talk about the flavors of both!

Conclusion

In summary, Moon Lodge Chips are a private label brand, and for the most part, they are just like any other chip out there. But the creation of The Whole Shabang flavor is what really set them apart. Now, The Whole Shabang is its very own line, and that line is available to the general public.

They are delicious, and there really is no other flavor that has ever been just like them. You may just want to try a bag!
