Snickers Peanut Butter

History

The first Peanut Butter Snickers was sold in the 1960s. This was the basic Snickers Bar but with added peanut butter layered over the nougat. There have been various versions of the peanut butter Snickers that have been added over the years because this first bar was such a success.

Peanut butter in candy bars is very popular these days, but this would have seemed a little strange when this candy bar was first made. This is a much more modern candy bar sensibility that Snickers was ahead of the curve with. Despite being a bit unique at the time, this candy bar was a hit, and there have been added peanut butter extensions to the Snickers lineup.

The original variety of Snickers Peanut Butter was later joined by Snickers Creamy Peanut Butter and later by Snickers Peanut Butter Protein Bars. The protein bars are the newest addition to the Snickers lineup, and there are other versions of this style bar as well. Snickers used the peanut butter version of this bar to help launch the lineup since this is a common protein bar flavor profile.

Snickers were sold for the first time in 1930. The name of the candy bar was chosen based on the name of the Mars family’s favorite horse. In the UK and Ireland, this candy bar was sold under the name “Marathon Bar” until 1990. At this time, the Snickers name became global to try to eliminate confusion about the product. By this time, there were lots of other candy bars that were similar to the Snickers bar, and the two names were creating issues with the recognition of the Snickers Bar.

Snickers are now sold in mini bars, in extra caramel bars, in fiery and sweet and salty varieties. So why not additional peanut butter varieties? This is a candy bay company that knows how to market unique products while also standing by the original bar that made the brand great. Snickers have always been excellent at creating unique marketing opportunities for themselves, and their ads and additional varieties have always been spot on for what the market wants.

Marketing

The peanut butter version of the candy bar was largely marketed by word of mouth related to the success of the original candy bar at first. Snickers have worked harder in recent years to market the new “squares” version of their bars which was launched with the peanut butter version of this new bar shape first.

Snickers Peanut Butter products seem not to have needed much of a push to be successful, but recently there have been bigger efforts by Mars to make people aware that these products exist. This candy bar also benefits from the very well-known “you’re not you when you are hungry” ads that have been such a big success. Peanut butter Snickers and the other varieties of the bars have all been lumped into the ad success related to the original bar, and this has helped to make people interested in trying out new versions of this classic candy bar.

While Snickers long ago stepped back from the argument that their product could take the place of a real meal, the candy bar was marketed this way for so long that all the other varieties of the bars have benefitted from this association. Since lots of health foods are made with peanut butter, the extension of Snickers into the health food space with the protein bar was an easy leap.

Many people today automatically associate Snickers bars with health food due to the inclusion of peanut butter in this lineup of products. It remains to be seen whether candy bars will be let off the hook in the long run for pretending to be healthy foods just because they include peanut butter. For now, the trend to associate peanut butter with healthy eating is still clear in most people’s minds.

Snickers peanut butter products are very enjoyable, and they would probably make the grade even without dubious claims related to healthy eating. Most people love peanut butter, so any product that is made with peanut butter in it is likely to be a big success in the long run. Snickers will likely benefit from both kinds of promotion for their peanut butter products in the years to come, even if they don’t make a big effort to sell them.

  1. might be great if you live in the US, here in Australia our Snickers peanut butter candy bar weighs in at a miserable 32 grams, not even a decent mouthful and the price continues to rise in the local supermarkets. Sorry but come on in SUCKERS.
