Toblerone

Brief History

The credits for creating this amazing candy go to Jean Tobler, a Swiss chocolatier, who first opened a confectionery shop in 1868, and after one year of success, he was able to open up his chocolate factory in Bern in 1899. Soon after, his son, Theodor, took over the business.

Theodor was trying to invent something new and exclusive that everyone would love, and finally, after 8 years, he achieved his goal by mixing milk chocolate, honey, and almond nougat. In 1908, people were already lucky enough to enjoy this incredible candy. The idea of filling creamy chocolates with crunchy Italian candy torrone (honey and nut nougat) was a clever thing to do!

Name Origins & Unusual Shape

You might have already guessed that the name of the candy originates from the last name of the inventor, but what about the second part of it? Tobler, surprisingly, gave birth to the Toblerone—a word that combines Tobler and Torrone (Italian for nougat) and is a perfect fit for the candy.

Don’t you sometimes wonder why they commonly make square-shaped chocolate bars? Let’s face it, sometimes it gets boring, and in this case, Toblerone candy is the bar you need!

While visiting your favorite corner store, it’s easy to spot the pyramid-shaped, gold foil-wrapped chocolate bars on the chocolate shelf. The triangle shape is what makes Toblerone once more a unique candy that deserves the fame.

It is interesting why they decided to use the triangular shape for the candy. According to one version, the shape was inspired by the mountain Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps. But there is another version as well. According to Theodor’s sons, the shape was inspired by a show Theodor saw, where the final scene ended with a pyramid shape that dancers created.

It’s all up to you what you believe, but the picture of an Alpine mountain drawn on the candy wrapper makes the first version stronger than the second one.

Toblerone Cocktail

Because the candy is so popular, they’ve created a drink that’s based on classic Swiss chocolate. As sweet as the candy, the cocktail is nutty and creamy. For extra texture and sweetness, heavy cream and honey syrup are added to it, and a chocolate-coated rim and Toblerone chocolate shavings complete the cocktail!

If you are a fan of Toblerone candy and want to experience much more, then you must try the Toblerone cocktail! However, drinking too many candy cocktails can be just as bad as eating too much candy, but every now and then, the liquid interpretation of the classic candy bar will make your candy adventure more colorful and interesting.

Why Is Toblerone Associated With Air Travel?

Toblerone is one of the most successful candies worldwide, but interestingly, unlike other candy bars, it is also strongly associated with air travel. It is interesting how the chocolate became attached to it at first.

Candy wasn’t available in every grocery store in the beginning, so families brought this candy on their vacations while traveling, mostly at the airport. Their kids grew up, and now they remember candy as something associated with their parents, vacations, family activities, and so on.

That’s why people have strong nostalgia when buying Toblerone, and the brand, like such strong nostalgia, doesn’t easily get forgotten since it reminds many people of their childhood sweet memories.

A Marketing Specialty

Usually, every candy brand tries to be visible from every corner to everyone; they spend money, hire celebrities, and create tons of ads and commercials, but Toblerone stands out as the rare product that hasn’t bothered us with annoying marketing communication. So this is a kind of candy that is not for everyone, and that’s what makes it even more special: the feeling of luxury is where the Toblerone hits the mark across cultures.

The value of the brand is also highly affected by its packaging, which has remained the same for all these years and made people much more nostalgic about the candy.

Mistakes & Incidents

As a matter of fact, the brand had some problems in 2016 when they decided to redesign the candy in case they needed to reduce the amount of chocolate. According to its parent company, Mondelez, the decision was made because of the high cost of ingredients. Because of this, the brand was criticized by its fans, but two years later, the original shape and size returned, but.. at a higher price.

It felt like Toblerone had cheated its loyal customers. Brands like Toblerone should be careful to make such decisions since they have a strong nostalgic meaning for people.

While looking for some Toblerone candy bars online, you might also see the term “Toblerone affair”. One bar caused the demise of an unfortunate Swedish politician, who was caught purchasing the chocolate using taxpayers’ money.

Where to Find Toblerone

As we mentioned, the brand doesn’t sell candy bars in every shop, but Toblerone can be found in the candy section of certain shops. Places like grocery stores, drug stores, and specialty food stores may have the candy on their sweet shelves. You can also check out some local shops that offer treats from other countries.

If it’s more convenient for you or you can’t locate this amazing candy in your local stores, then good for you. It’s also available on Amazon and other online stores.
