Top Picks for Candy Beginning with the Letter S

Let’s start with some of the best options out there. These first few candy that starts with S are some of our top favorites out there. You will most likely recognize these and maybe even we will touch on your favorite here.

Starburst

STARBURST

Starburst candies are manufactured by the Wrigley Company. These little squares are made to be like a taffy candy. Originally, they were sold in a little sleeve that contained several individually wrapped squares of the candy. Now, you can purchase them in other sizes, including Starburst minis.

The original flavors for Starburst were strawberry, lemon, orange, and cherry. Fun fact: the original flavors in the UK were actually different than the US. Their original flavors were lemon and lime, blackcurrant, orange, and strawberry instead.

Now, there are many other flavors and types of flavors to choose from. They even have a tropical pack that expands the flavors. The originals are still out there, of course. This candy first came out in the UK in 1960 and came to the US in 1967.

When these first came out, they were actually called Opal Fruits. It was not until several years later that they changed the name to Starburst. The name Starburst started with the US line of candy, which led to changes elsewhere.

Sugar Babies

SUGAR BABIES

Sugar Babies candy should bring back some memories for some of us. This chewy, caramel candy is about the size of a jelly bean but it’s sweet and chewy and oh so tasty. These came out in 1935 and have always been a classic. They were made by an individual named James Welch

Later on, the company was sold to Nabisco and later to Tootsie Roll. Now, if you look at the packaging, the manufacturer’s name is labeled as Charms, which is located in Tennessee. Sugar babies are bite-sized chewy candies but there are Sugar Daddy candy and Sugar Mama candy that are both candies made with the same concept in different sizes.

There isn’t much else to know about this delightful candy. At one time there was concern that they were discontinued but it appears they are just with a lesser known candy company at this time. They are still out there and still available but may be harder to find in some areas.

Skittles

SKITTLES

Taste the rainbow with Skittles – or at least that’s what the commercial always says! Skittles are very similar to M&Ms in looks but these are fruity chewable candies instead of chocolate. Skittles came out in 1974. They were made by a British company originally. They didn’t come to the US until 1979. At that time, they were imported and then they started production in 1982 within the US.

Skittles has been involved in some controversial things over the years where they’ve been highlighted in the media. This includes changing their rainbow colors to white to support the LGBT (at the time) community as well as political situations in 2010 and 2016, although it wasn’t really the fault of the company in those scenarios.
